School days are long. There is the morning rush, the noisy lunchroom, the test she is nervous about, and the friend drama she will not tell you about until bedtime. We cannot follow her into every classroom. But Allah is already there. Teaching her short, simple duaas gives her a direct line to her Rabb at every part of the day.
Before leaving for school
Bismillah is the smallest word and the strongest start. Teach her to say it every time she steps out the door. Then add the duaa for knowledge before she walks into class:
Rabbi zidnee ʿilma — "My Lord, increase me in knowledge." (Quran 20:114)
During the school day
When something gets hard, when a teacher is frustrating, when a friend is unkind, she has duaas of her own. She is not powerless. She is connected.
Hasbunallahu wa niʿmal-wakeel — "Allah is sufficient for us, and the best disposer of affairs." (Quran 3:173)
Rabbi yassir wa la tuʿassir — "My Lord, make it easy and do not make it difficult."
At lunch
Bismillah before, Alhamdulillah after. If she forgets the bismillah and remembers in the middle:
Bismillahi awwalahu wa akhirahu — "In the name of Allah, in its beginning and its end." (Sunan Abi Dawud, sahih)
Before schoolwork and tests
Two of the most powerful duaas she can lean on are these. Teach them early. They will carry her through college, work, and motherhood one day.
Allahumma infaʿnee bima ʿallamtanee, wa ʿallimnee ma yanfaʿunee, wa zidnee ʿilma — "O Allah, benefit me with what you taught me, teach me what benefits me, and increase me in knowledge."
Allahumma la sahla illa ma jaʿaltahu sahla, wa anta tajʿalul-hazna idha shi'ta sahla — "O Allah, there is no ease except in what You make easy, and You make hardship easy when You will." (Ibn Hibban, hasan)
Lead by example
Children do what they see. If they hear you making duaa in the car, before grocery shopping, before sending an email, they learn that duaa is not for emergencies. It is for ordinary life. That is the most important thing you can teach them.
May Allah make our children people of duaa, people of salah, and people who carry the deen with confidence wherever they go. Ameen.
