Teaching the Importance of Hijab

The first time your daughter wraps a hijab around her own head is a moment you will not forget. Whether she is four and copying you, or eleven and starting on her own, that moment is sacred. Our job as parents is to make sure she understands what she is putting on and that she chooses it from a place of love, not pressure.

1. Modesty is a value, not a punishment

Modesty in Islam is for everyone. It teaches us to value the inside over the outside. When a girl learns this young, she becomes harder to shake. The world will tell her she is only as valuable as how she looks. The hijab reminds her every morning that she is so much more than that.

"Tell the believing women to lower their gaze and guard their chastity, and not to display their adornment except what is apparent of it."  — Quran 24:31

2. Dignity, not invisibility

The hijab does not erase her. It frames her. It says: judge me for who I am, not what you can see of my body. That kind of presence makes a girl walk differently. She walks like someone whose worth is not up for debate.

"O Prophet, tell your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers to bring down over themselves part of their outer garments. That is more suitable that they will be known and not be abused."  — Quran 33:59

3. Faith made visible

Hijab is a piece of her identity she can hold in her hands. When she wears it, she is signaling — to herself first, then to the world — that she belongs to Allah. That visibility builds belonging. She knows where she stands, and so does every other Muslim girl who sees her.

4. A choice that builds independence

Hijab is not forced. It is taught, modeled, and ultimately chosen. When a girl chooses to wear it, she is practicing one of the most important muscles a young Muslim can develop: the ability to make a decision based on her values, even when the world disagrees.

5. The parent's role

Talk to her. Let her ask questions, even uncomfortable ones. Wear yours with joy and not complaint. Find her hijabs that fit her age, her style, and her personality — not just generic ones. The brand she puts on shapes the relationship she builds with hijab. We take that responsibility seriously at Bint Hawa.

A gentle reminder

Hijab is a journey, not a finish line. Some days she will love it. Some days she will struggle with it. Be patient. Be present. Keep pointing her back to the reason: not for the aunties, not for the cousins, not for anyone but Allah.
